“Who was that masked man?”
It’s a question runners and supporters at the 26.2 with Donna ask themselves on race day as they spy the marathon’s unofficial, colorfully costumed superhero sprint by. He is a vision in a pink Spiderman outfit, a spirited champion of everything the nation’s only breast cancer marathon is all about. He is Pink Spidey, and he’ll be joining hundreds of other runners at the starting line come February 21st.
The story of Pink Spidey begins two years ago, when he saw Donna talking about the inaugural race on a local TV news program. An avid runner and participant in other Jacksonville running events, Pink Spidey knew a worthy cause when he saw one and decided to go ahead and run the half marathon that year---as his “plain clothes” alter ego. It wasn’t until the next year that Pink Spidey made his debut. The people of Jacksonville loved him. Children cheered and followed him along from the sidelines, parents snapped photos, fellow runners smiled and offered encouragement. The support was overwhelming, and before long, Pink Spidey found himself in training for this year’s full 26.2 with Donna.
So, the obvious question is, why does he do it? Simple. Pink Spidey is out to create excitement and enthusiasm for the race, to help spread the word and inspire others to get involved.
